What To Look For In A Mini Fridge
If you got this far down, you’ve seen the best of the best and gotten a good idea about pricing. Now let’s talk about what you should b thinking about when you’re making your final choice.
This one seems obvious, but take measurements if you think there’s a possibility that it won’t fit. You don’t want to order something for under your desk only to find out it’s too tall. Check the dimensions!
If you’re going to be moving it around, weight is an important consideration. Generally speaking, mini fridges are fairly light – at least in comparison to standard size. If you’re going to install it in a boat, RV, or other vehicle, you want something that’s not too big or bulky.
If you want to be able to plug into your car or vehicle lighter, make sure your unit comes with the right cables. Smaller 6-can sized “desk top” mini fridges are a good bet.
This is a great feature that’s pretty much standard – though always double check. It allows you to have the hinges on either the right or left hand side so that the door opens out to the right or left. It’s easy to switch the way the door opens. The instructions will show you but it only takes a little general knowledge and a screwdriver. Once you have to door mounted and opening in the direction you want, you’ll have the most comfortable and convenient set up.
This is a big one. The fact is, most mini fridges have a pretty similar size range. The interior organization is where they make their individual mark. Here are some features you might want to look for: can holster, egg tray, glass shelves for easy cleaning, separate veg drawer.
There’s the 1 door mini fridge with freezer and the 2 door. The freezer inside the 1 door may or may not be full width. Keep in mind that a typical mini fridge with freezer isn’t generally equipped with the most efficient freezer. I wouldn’t plan on long term storage of any product that’s gonna spoil like meat or fish. You have to be realistic about what mini fridges can do. They will also have an easier time if the items you put inside the freezer are already frozen.
These days there’s a rainbow of colors out there so you don’t have to stick with black, white, or stainless. There are novelty one’s too, so keep an open mind and you might just have a cool mini fridge and conversation starter in one.
In general, mini fridges really aren’t big power hogs. They vary based on size and, not surprisingly, manufacturer. The specs should tell you what to expect. Apply to your local energy rate to calculate monthly or annual costs.
For this chart I found a study that compared single door mini fridges with a small built in freezer compartment (except the one noted 2-door fridge).
|Brand||Size in Cubic Feet||Estimated Yearly Electricity Use|
|MicroChill (2 door)||4.5||259 kWh|
Look for energy efficient rated units. They save on power and keep running smoothly.
Most mini fridges use compressor-powered cooling systems. That’s a fancy way of saying they use tubes running behind the storage unit filled with gas to keep the stuff inside the fridge cold. It basically removes the heat. Some compact fridges work with thermoelectric cooling systems. Basically, that’s where they embed a heat sink with a powered fan behind the storage section. They’re quieter but not as efficient as compressors.
Having a cool mini fridge can make or break a room and the experience you have in it. Even the smallest mini fridge brings a smile to the face of someone who wants a cool drink. Choose a good one from my list and I know you’ll get a great price here.
Keep cool! – Mariano
